What We Do

We bring together English students and volunteer English tutors. Students of all ages and backgrounds want to learn and improve their oral English and you can help.

There is no charge to either students or tutors. Students connect with tutors and together they set up a mutually convenient schedule of voice sessions. Most find that daily sessions of 30 minutes work best. There is no grade and no pressure. If you don't have Skype it is an easy download and set-up. You can exchange email addresses for sending links, assignments, or just to keep in touch. You can also chat and send documents in Skype.

What do you talk about? Just about everything that the student wants. We find, and recent research shows, that students benefit the most from discussing their own interests. Among the many topics of discussion the most popular are mental health and mind, family relations, love and romance, school life, and interpersonal relations. What do you NOT discuss? Religion and politics are definitely to be avoided. This is about the only rule we enforce.

Remember, when you listen, both of you learn. Your goal is to allow the student the opportunity to practice English. Correct grammar and pronunciation when needed, but don't expect or demand perfection.

What is your commitment? Both tutors and students are expected to be prompt, courteous, respectful, and helpful. If you have to miss a session, be considerate and let the other know in advance. Make the learning process enjoyable and you will both benefit.

You don't have to know English grammar rules or the difference between past perfect progressive and conditional simple tenses. You don't have to know how to use the semi-colon. We are not professional language teachers and we have much to learn. We want to learn from each other what works best, so share your stories and resources with us.
